Features of Canon® Printer MP830
Canon Pixma MP830 is an affordable color inkJet multifunction printer that would work equally well in a very small office and at home. It has an automatic document feeder, an inbuilt duplexer, a media card reader, and a USB port for printing straight from a camera. While it prints and the scans quickly, the quality of the prints left something to be desired.
Canon Pixma MP830 is geared more toward small business use, provides two key features not found on the other two models faxing capabilities and an automatic document feeder. The ADF makes scanning, copying or faxing documents up to 35 pages easy, and its duplexing ability means you would not have to flip two sided sheets over manually. In conjunction with the front loading 150 sheets cassette and the rear 150 sheets automatic sheet feeder, the ADF also allows for high capacity two sided copying. For color faxing, the machine includes 36.6kbps support plus memory for 250 incoming pages and 100 custom speed dial numbers.
The black and slate Canon Pixma MP830 is all smooth curves and the rounded edges rather stylish for a printer designed for small offices. It is reasonably compact for an office all in one printer, at 19.7 inches wide by 19.2 inches deep by 11.5 inches tall and it weighs just over 32 pounds. The automatic document feeder is integrated into the scanner lid, making for a solidly constructed unit. The paper support flap of the ADF folds down when not in use that helps the unit look tidy. Although the scanner lids hinges do lift a bit to accommodate thicker books, it does not lift out entirely. In fact, the user guide says the cover could handle originals only up to 0.8 inches thick. So, copying anything bulkier than that would require you to hang out and do the covers job yourself. The ADF holds about 35 sheets of A4 or letter size paper and up to 30 sheets of legal size paper.
- FIVE – INK color
Canon Pixma MP830 uses black, yellow, magenta and cyan dye-based ink in addition to pigment black. Each cartridge includes a red LED that flashes when ink is running low, a feature also found on Canon Pixma MP500 and MP950. Though the units graphics and the photo prints featured vibrant color and the deep black, saw some slight banding, and skin tones were a little unnaturally orange.
- FOUR – Media card slots
Canon Pixma MP830 has inbuilt media card slots behind a hinged door at the lower right of the unit front panel. Most digital camera memory card formats are supported but you would need a third party adapter to read the xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick Duo and Mini SD Card formats. A direct print port on the front allows you to the output straight from a PictBridge compatible camera or the DV camcorder.
- THREE – Replacing ink tanks
Replacing the five ink tanks is a simple task and the top of the printer flips up to reveal the ink tanks and the print heads, and by flipping a lever, you could pull out each tank individually. Being able to replace individual tanks is a boon, as you would not waste colors you use less frequently. Canon ships the Pixma MP830 with full ink tanks and replacement color and dye based black ink tanks apiece, while the pigment based black ink tank.
- TWO – Quality
The colors were the bright and the saturated skin tones looked realistic and it showed nice detail. The more expensive handled color graphics better, producing better color representation and better quality text. The grayscale scan was decent, though in the shadows, it lost some details, as it could not handle the extreme dark end of the grayscale. In sum, Canon Pixma MP830 print quality suffices for home users and small office users who do not need high quality graphics prints.
- ONE – Speed
Canon Pixma MP830 was the impressively speedy for an inkJet printer. It is printed black text at an impressive 7.7ppm and a PowerPoint presentation file at 3.03ppm. It was quick on the photo printing. Canon Pixma MP830 was the first printer you have tested using the 4x6 format.
