- FIVE – Samsung ML-1710 Print Quality
The print quality of the ML-1710 is what you would expect from a laser printer. It is crisp and clean with no bleeding. The letters and lines are sharp, and the printing is very, very fast. If you cannot tell which is which, we are not going to tell you. The Samsung ML-1710 takes a few seconds to warm up before printing begins. However, when printing multiple pages, the Samsung ML-1710 really pulls away from a conventional inkjet. Printing a ten-page paper took almost two minutes longer on the inkjet as compared to the Samsung ML-1710 laser printer.
- FOUR – Examining the Samsung ML-1710
The Samsung ML-1710 ships with one standard three-prong power cable, driver CD, a warranty card, and a very comprehensive manual. It would have been nice to have a USB cable included, however it was not in the package. The Samsung ML-1710 also comes with a feature called "Toner Saver". According to Samsung, by pressing this button, you can save up to 40% of the toner used normally. I noticed no discernable quality degradation when using the Toner Saver option.
- THREE – Samsung ML-1710 Testing
For our testing procedure we printed several documents at both toner saver and standard setting. Some images were printed as well, but since this is a monochrome printer, not much emphasis was put on graphics. You can see how crisp the text is in these photos. The image shows some spotting, but that is how it was in the original PDF file.
- TWO – Lasers, Not Just For Removing Unsightly Hair
The Samsung ML-1710 Laser printers used to be for big business and the rich. Prices were astronomical, ranging from $1,000 at the low end to more than $5,000 for a high-end unit. As with everything, as time goes on and technology progresses, prices fall and once exotic and glamorous products become mainstream. Laser printers are no exception to this rule.
- ONE – Print Quality
Laser printers have always been known to produce the best quality print. The Samsung ML-1710 uses electro photography, which is considered "True Laser" printing. This gives much sharper and crisper text than an ink or bubble jet style of printing. Also, laser printing does not smudge or bleed, even when wet. Big bonus when you have to carry that term paper three blocks across campus in a rainstorm.
