Configuring Printer Server
Get to know more about configuring printer server on a computer
A print server is connected to one or more printers and also connected to a client computer over a network. This makes it capable of accepting print jobs from the computers and send it to the appropriate printers. It is simply a device that allows computer workstations to interface with one or more printers that are shared on a network. Each of the stations has the ability to designate one of the printers on the network as its default printer, but might choose to send a print job to any of the other printers recognized by the print server. One computer of the network group is designated as the print server. The software for this function is loaded onto the hard drive of the computer.
Following are the common problems that may arise while configuring printer server on a computer:
- Printer Stops Printing
- Print Jobs Are slow or Print is Garbled
- Print Jobs Are Large for Print Server Buffer
Printer Stops Printing
Sometimes you cannot see the printer in the wizard when using the 'Windows Add Printer' Wizard or the NETGEAR 'Print Server Wizard'. Also sometimes the printer stops printing. You must make sure that the spool settings for the print server are set to 'Print' after the last page is spooled and then make sure that the data format is set to 'RAW'. All these settings should make a difference on how the print server responds.
Print Jobs Are slow or Print is Garbled
In these situations do not use the first-gear setup program. Proceed to the ports program for the printer and be sure that the printer is already installed by way of the LPT port on the computer and change the port of the printer to 'device_namep1'. HP printers will not install using first-Gear program from Netgear. Do not use the first-Gear setup program. You must install the printer to the computer's LPT port. And then, connect the printer to the parallel port on the print server.
Print Jobs Are Large for Print Server Buffer
One of the main problems that arise while configuring a printer server on a computer is the print server Print Jobs are too large for the print server buffer. The buffer is only 64K, so it might find difficulty in executing large print jobs. To install the printer ports do not use the Firstgear setup program. Follow the instructions in the document for adding the port. It will not always work, but it will help the buffer to execute larger print jobs than it would if the printer had been installed with the print server setup program.
