Windows® 7 Printer Driver Removal
How do you remove printer drivers from Windows 7?
Windows 7 is developed by Microsoft and it is licensed, and supported by Microsoft. In Windows 7 data is protected from security threats that affect software. It also provides support from Microsoft along with updates and downloads which keep your computer up to date. In computers, a printer driver or a print processor is a piece of software that converts data to be printed to the form specific to a printer. The purpose of printer drivers are to allow applications to print without being aware of technical details of each printer model. Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is a tool included in Windows 7 which is built into Windows in order to remove the drivers. When a printer becomes error-prone or refuses to work efficiently, the first thing you need to do is to check and reinstall drivers.
Ways to uninstall printer drivers from a Windows 7 system:
- Unplug the printer
- Uninstalling printer drivers
- Things to keep in mind
Unplug the printer
Before uninstalling or removing the printer driver you need to unplug or disconnect the printer from the computer. Disconnecting is very simple in most printers as you need to just unplug the USB cable which is plugged into the rear of the printer. But network printers are not needed to be physically disconnected, you need to just leave them alone in case others are connected to them.
Uninstalling printer drivers
First of all, you need to reboot your computer and login as 'Administrator'. Click 'Start' and type 'MMC', then in the start menu, a shortcut of Microsoft Management Console appears. You need to click it and select 'File' and click 'Add or Remove Snap' and scroll down in the list and select the 'Print Management' snap-in and then select 'Add'. Then select 'Add the Local Server', press 'Finish', and then select 'Ok'. After that, scroll down to your computer name and select the driver’s tree and then right click on the driver that you want to remove and select 'Remove Driver Package'.
Things to keep in mind
Sometimes when you right click on a printer driver and delete it, you may not remove the printer driver from the machine. Often while working with print servers and testing multiple drivers, sometimes you need to completely remove a driver package from the computer so that you will be able to install a new or different one. So it is better to delete the complete driver from the system.
