Printer is a device that prints text or illustrations on paper. Many printers are primarily used as local peripherals, and are attached by a printer cable. Based on the external medium, printers are classified into two types: wireless printer and wired printer. Wired printers use a physical medium and wireless printer does not use any physical medium, instead it uses a wireless network to connect with the computer. It is parallel interface for connecting an external device such as a printer to a computer. On PCs, the parallel port uses a 25-pin connector and is used to connect printers and other devices that need relatively high bandwidth. It is called Centronics interface after the company that designed the original standard for parallel communication between a computer and printer. The new parallel ports, which support the same connectors as the Centronics interface, are Enhanced Parallel Port and Extended Capabilities Port. These parallel ports support bi-directional communication and transfer rates 10 times as fast as the Centronics port. When a PC sends data to a printer using a parallel port, 8 bits of data is send at a time. You can see the parallel port connector in the rear panel of your PC. It is simple and inexpensive tool with ease of programming.
The IEEE 1284 standard supports faster throughput and bidirectional data flow. It has theoretical maximum throughput of 4 megabits per second and actual throughput around 2 megabits depending on the hardware. In the printers, it allows faster printing and back-channel status and management. Since the new standard allowed the peripheral to send large amounts of data back to the host, devices which used SCSI interfaces can be produced at a much lower cost. This included scanners, tape drives, computer networks connected directly via parallel interface and other devices. IEEE 1284 operates in 5 modes: Compatibility mode(SPP), Nibble mode, Byte mode, EPP and ECP.
Turn off the PC. Connect one end of the parallel cable to the printer and other end to the parallel port on your system. Reboot your system. Windows will notify you that it has found new hardware, no further action is needed. New Hardware Wizard opens on your screen. Select the required option of printer manufacturers from the list. Scroll down the list until you locate the right manufacturer. Select the model number from the listed printers in the windowpane and click on 'Ok' to install the printer drivers. Once the drivers are installed, your printer is ready to use.
