What is printer redirction? How can we redirect a printer?
There are many makes and models of printers available in the market which have advanced features and are capable of printing documents and images at a very high speed. Demand and use of printers in Corporate sector or in companies is very high when compared to a home or small office. Hence, there are many printers and each would differ in print qualities. So, you need to manage the printing jobs effectively to save cost or time. High priority user should get print outs in lesser time than the low priority user, and high quality printouts should be provided to the users who need them. There is no need to print a draft document in photo quality printing. Printer re-direction feature would help to manage the printing job effectively by setting printing rules for each user or for a group of users.
Following are important points related to Printer Redirection:
- Share printers
- Configure printer redirection
There would be many users in the network who need different types and qualities of print outs. In normal cases, user can take print outs from any network printer which can result in unnecessary high usage of high quality ink. Using printer redirection technique, you can assign printers for a user or a group of users. Users who need high quality prints can take printouts from high quality printers and rest of the groups would have access only to draft mode printers. This technique also helps you to set user priority, that is, print jobs are carried out on priority bases. Hence, the print jobs are effectively managed.
To configure the printer redirection, you need to install printer drivers and share all of them. You can use installation disc provided by the printer manufacturer to install the printer. Once its installed, you can open up the printer settings via control panel, right click on the printer and enable printer sharing. Once the printer is shared, every user in the network would have access to all printers.
Once all the printers are shared, you need to open up the group policy editor on network server to set-up printer redirection. You can navigate through the options based on Operating System that you have on the network server or type 'gpedit.msc’ in the Run box to open Group policy editor. In group policy editor, open 'terminal server' in 'terminal services' under 'windows component' in 'administrative templates'. Here, you can modify the LPT and printer redirection settings. Once the settings are saved, all the print jobs would be redirected based on the rules and settings that you have modified in Group policy.
