Printer Server

Learn about printer server.
A printer server is a device that enables printers to print through network connections rather than through USB cables or printer cable connections. With the use of printer servers, printers can be shared easily through a Local Area Network. Print jobs are simply sent from remote computers to the client computer for execution via a wireless network connection.
Features and role of printer server are discussed over here:
- Wireless connection
- Cables/USB Jack
- Software
Wireless connection
A printer server is made to work in a wireless network. A wireless network enables computers/laptops to use any computer in the network without the need for wires. There are two standard printer servers that will work on a wireless network. They are IEEE 802.11 b and 802.11 g. 802.11 g. The good news, however, is that the old printer server works just as well as the new one in a wireless connection. Wireless connection eliminates the need for bulky wires that are used by traditional computers to communicate with the PC. A wireless service provider will provide the network for the communication between the servers and the PC at a fee.
In case your wireless network has more than one printer server device a router will be needed. The ordinary firewalls used in computers for daily use may be used as a router.
Cable Jacks
Popularly used jacks with printer server are the USB jacks. A USB jack is about a half an inch long. It fits on the printer server perfectly only visible as a small slit. USB jacks have two corners rounded in the peripheral side.
LPT jacks may also be used on print servers. These jacks were invented earlier than the USB ones. They have been around for quite some time. To use them one will need a printer cable. Unlike the USB ones which are small thus not easily identifiable these are easily identifiable. They are, in fact, 3 inches long.
For the printer server to function, the right software should be installed on the hard disk. This software should be configured in the right way as shown in the manual or as directed by a technician. The configuration of the software will enable it to recognize all the computers in a particular office and to connect all workstations together. In case a printer has temporarily failed, and it is the default printer it should be easy to set another computer in the network as the default printer.
The role of a printer server is well evident in the case of a virtual office where networks may be situated miles apart. These printers also have vital importance at home.
