Printer Issues: Common Reasons and Fixes
Printers are required to print out documents and pictures from your computer. Printers are generally reliable but there still persists some common problems that may bother you occasionally. While printing, you might face that the printer is not printing correctly or it is not printing at all. Although simple to fix, these issues are annoying nonetheless. Here are the most common problems and their fixes to help you come out of a “printer not printing” error…
- Paper Jam
The commonest of these is the jamming of paper. A printer jam happens for various reasons – either dirt has filled in, wrong type of paper is being used while printing, or the rollers of the printers are damaged or worn out. Keeping the printer clean and using the correct type of paper can help solve the first two instances. Replacing the paper roller can be difficult depending on the printer you are using. In some printers, the rollers are easily accessible while in some others it might be difficult and you will need to completely tear them down. When you are removing a paper from the printer that has jammed, pull the paper in the direction from where the paper comes out; pulling the paper backwards may damage the printer severely.
- Faded printing
While printing a document or picture if the quality of the print is low or faded it means:
o The toner of the printer is getting low
o The printer density is set in low mode
o The Economic mode of the printer is turned on
For printer density and Economic mode, the printer self- test will show you the current settings. If the print quality is faded, simply turn off the Economic mode and set the print density of the printer to higher. If the toner of the printer is low, either replace the toner or pull out the cartridge and shake it well for redistributing the toner evenly.
- Not able to find driver of a particular operating system
You will be required to load new drivers for your existing printer, in case you have upgraded your operating system. So, in case there is a mismatch, your printer will not be able to print correctly. To fix this mismatch error, consult the printer manual or download the appropriate drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
- Toner smears on paper
While printing a document or picture if you notice that the toner has smeared all over the paper, it might mean three things.
o The toner cartridge of the printer may be defective
o Some toner may have spilled out in the printer
o The fuser assembly may be damaged
To fix these issues, clean the toner that has spilled over in the printer and change the toner cartridge if it is defective. It is also advisable that you don’t attempt to repair a fuser assembly if it is damaged; rather, replace the component. Since it is a consumable printer part it is not worth fixing it.
- Trouble printing envelopes
Printing envelopes from laser printers may create problems at times. If the envelopes that you are printing are coming out already sealed, then you need to make sure if the adhesive is capable of withstanding the heat that the fuser releases while printing. Choose envelopes that are close to 20-lbs paper in thickness and weight for printing correctly. If the envelopes are coming out wrinkled, then it may be too stiff for the paper path. You can also open the rear of the printer and let the envelopes exit at that location instead.
