Connect Printer to Computer
Steps for connecting a printer to a computer
In order to connect printer and computer, you have to position your printer with required ventilation. Buy a bidirectional, IEEE 1284 compliant parallel printer cable and compare the connectors at the opposite ends of the cable. After shutting down the computer, attach 25 pins at the end of the cable to the parallel printer or port on the computer. Then tighten the hand screws securely and connect the other end of the cable into the printer's socket. Match the retaining clips and then plug the power cord into the printer and into the surge suppressor. Now you may turn on the printer and install cartridges according to the printer manufacturer's instructions. After that turn on the computer and install the printer driver software according to the manufacturer's instructions. Later, you have to add the printer to the list of printers that your computer recognizes if it is a Windows operating system, whereas if it is a Macintosh, just select the new printer.
Methods to connect a printer to a computer and tips to solve the issues faced while doing so are mentioned below:
- Connect through USB or Ethernet cable
- Issues with older drivers and operating systems
- Printer fails to print
Connect through USB or Ethernet cable
This is one of the most common ways and the difference between the two is in speed. Having a printer connected through an Ethernet cable is generally much faster in comparison to those connected through the USB. If you want to connect a printer to a computer via a USB cable, it is easy. With most of the latest operating systems, simply connect the printer. Then the computer will automatically look for drivers that are compatible to it. Also there are other approaches to connect between computer and printer such as infrared technology, network hubs, split channels, etc.
Issues with older drivers and operating systems
If you are using an older version of your operating system or if you have purchased a more up to date printer, you might need to install the printer individually. The recommended step is to follow the step by step guide in the manufactures guide book. Usually most people tend to install the software first for both in case of the USB and Ethernet cable. During the installation, the PC will prompt you to connect the printer to it. It is only then that you have to connect the printer and not before that.
You should reinstall your printer drivers if you find that your documents fail to print or if the printer is not displayed in Windows at all. Unfortunately, this does not always resolve printer problems. There is likely an issue with registry entries. In case of reinstalling drivers, restarting Windows fails to resolve the problem. You will have to then reset the registry information using the Windows registry editor or any other registry fixing software available from the web.
